Rembrandt Cross Stitch Challenge

Perhaps the most challenging cross stitch conversion I've encountered was in creating true to the painting cross stitch patterns of Rembrandt's painting. For those of you familiar with the works of Rembrandt, his paintings were usually dark with dramatic splashes of color to enhance the subject. I remember reading about his life story where it says that his paintings at that time was rejected by most because it was dark. Art patrons back then were used to light, bright paintings and here comes Rembrandt with his mostly black or dark paintings.

I had to create a balance between the colors to ensure that it does not totally come out too dark but also come close to the actual painting. The patterns went through a lot retries before I got it just right. My favorite among all those patterns that were created? The Man with the Golden Helmet. Very dramatic, dark background, warm colors on the face and helmet. I imagine this piece of cross stitch hanging in a library somewhere.

This is my tribute for the certified chocoholics (which includes me!). An easy cross stitch pattern that reminds us how "chocolate is the answer to everything". :) The finished size of the stitched project is 4" x 4" using 14 count aida. Using only 10 colors with some back stitching for accent, this easy cross stitch pattern can be finished in a day or so. Perfect to put on a simple frame for a gift or you can also integrate it into a pillow project.

Flower Fairies Year Round Wisdom

When I was a child, I was very much fascinated by fairies. I recall during those visits at the park, I'd carry a big book of flower fairies and keep it with me, studying all the details of the flower fairy in case I chanced upon one in the park. As an adult, I am still inspired by faerie creatures. They are wonderful magical creatures that remind us that we may not see them, but they are around us all the time!

The flower fairy cross stitch book mark project came out of that childhood inspiration. The idea was to create a bookmark per month with the flower fairy giving out a wisdom related to the flower assigned to her. So came the 12 series.

The patterns are created with 14 count aida in mind. They are simple, using mostly full cross stitches with some back stitches for detail. The stitcher can also opt to use a smaller weave aida but since the design is small, more back stitches is recommended to give the details more emphasis.

Is it a Skull or Something Else?

One of our customers was looking for an artwork by Charles Allan Gilbert entitled All is Vanity so I went searching for an image for this. When I found it, I first thought, "A skull?" now why would anyone want to stitch a skull? then I looked closer and saw the cleverness of this artwork. When the picture was blown up, you see a lady looking into the mirror! Well that would make a nice conversation piece won't it? Imagine your friends seeing the piece from afar then coming closer to see that it is not really what they first thought it was!

Here is the finished cross stitch pattern. Look at it from afar then up close.

The project uses only full stitches, 21 DMC floss and the finished size in a 14 aida is 11" x 14".

Cross Stitch Design Process

As a designer of paintings to cross stitch charts, a good balance between colors and finished cross stitch chart has be achieved. You can go to either extremes to get a very good result. For instance there are cross stitch charts available that go into hundreds of DMC floss usage or have a finished size that is huge. That is very good if you are a computer! But if you are an average cross stitcher, you usually do not have a stash of hundreds of floss to use nor do you want to spend a lifetime finishing your project!

For me, a great cross stitch painting project would be one that uses an average of about 50-60 DMC floss with a finished size that is about 14" in length maximum. This is usually my goal whenever I convert the painting to cross stitch chart. However in some cases, I have to break away from this norm and go towards either a huge chart or using more DMC floss.

One case is this painting by Byam Shaw entitled Rising Spring. Byam Shaw was an Indian born British painter. This particular painting has beautiful colors and a mystical theme. The original painting can be seen here:

To start with, I tried using 45 colors without dithering. This is a detail of the result. Watch how the body colors change from the number of DMC floss used:

This is okay but not great. I then went through adding more colors, 10 or 20 at a time. The colors of the surrounding flowers changed and became more detailed however the body color remained rather flat. That is until I hit 84 colors.. (what??? that many colors??) Yes unfortunately I couldn't get away from using that many colors on this one. As soon as I hit that mark, look at how the body detail changed:

Suddenly you see the contours of the body with much more detail! The chart uses low dithering in order to make the stitching process a lot easier. Also the finished sizes for a 14 count aida is just 11" x 14" (not a lifetime to finish!). So sacrifice a little more thread, retain a good finish size and you get a very good result in the end.

Fun Cross Stitch Pattern

Back in the 80's, I remember watching a musical called Little Shop of Horrors. It was one of those funny, quirky films that sticks to your mind for sometime. Well recently, I saw the original black and white film released in 1960. Did you know that Jack Nicholson had a small role on it as the masochistic patient in the dentist office? I hardly recognized the young Nicholson until I looked closely at those unmistakable piercing eyes! Watching the old film renewed my interest in this cult film. I found the original theatrical poster and thought it would make a nice fun cross stitch project. This is how the original poster looks like:

The first step on creating a cross stitch pattern for this poster is to edit it in Photoshop. I had to take out the text on the top and bottom. The white of the poster had to be brightened (it would become the white aida cloth).

This is how the picture looks like after all the editing on Photoshop:

Now the real work begins. This is how it looks like after the image to cross stitch pattern is done. I initially put this against a black aida cloth background to see how much trimming and defining needed to be done.

As you can see, the title has to be defined and the colors combined into one solid green shade, the other white outlines around the plant and man needed to be taken out. The pattern also started with 30 colors which probably would do with some consolidation. I'm often able to do without back stitching but in this case, I probably would need to do it around the man's face to define the smile and eyes.

When working with an image like this, designing the cross stitch pattern can be a bit tricky. You need to find the balance between getting just enough definition to make it look like the image but at the same time not making the finished cross stitch pattern too huge and complicated than it needs to be. After working on it for hours, this is how the final cross stitch pattern came out.

The finished cross stitch size for a 14 count aida cloth is 10" x 12". Just the right size to hang in your living room or play room! The DMC threads used on this is only 18 colors. Using full stitches and some back stitches on the face only.

This cross stitch pattern will be a delightful project for beginners!

Knight and Lady Cross Stitch Pattern

Whenever I am enthralled by a painting for a cross stitch project, I always try and research the story behind it. In this case, a painting of a Knight and Lady entitled Aucassin and Nicolette led to discovering that this was based on a medieval French "chante-fable" or a sung story. The story goes that Garin, Count of Beaucaire, prevented his son Aucassin, and Nicolette, a Saracen slave girl from getting married. Aucassin and Nicolette desperately want to marry, but Garin forbids it and imprisons the lovers, though they both eventually escape. After many romantic adventures, the young lovers are wed. Nicolette is revealed to be a Saracen princess of the noblest ancestry. Now isn't that an absolutely romantic story?

The 19th century painting by Marianne Stokes is on at the top and the cross stitch pattern interpretation on the bottom.

In order to retain the details of the faces, clothes and background, maximum dithering was used. That and using 53 DMC embroidery colors got it close to the painting. The finished cross stitch project on a 14 count aida will be 11" x 15". This will look great with dark wood framing and some gold staining. A great cross stitch project to grace the living room, drawing room, library or guest room.

Imagine having this cross stitch project hanging in your home and having to tell your guests about the story of Aucassin and Nicolette!

Mystical Figures of Luis Falero Cross Stitch Patterns

Luis Ricardo Falero (1851-1896) was one of the most original and distinguished artist of that period. His paintings featured mythological or fairy figures. One of his interests was in the supernatural which is clearly manifested in his paintings. For those who love fairy illustrations, you may already be familiar with the Lilly Fairy and Butterfly Fairy paintings, these were relatively easy to interpret into cross stitch patterns.

The more challenging interpretations into cross stitch patterns were the mythological paintings of Luis Falero. These paintings had a large portion of black background with some light color accent on the sides or around the figures. Rather than having the stitcher use black DMC floss to cover the background, the challenge was to use black AIDA cloth instead and interprete the rest of the colors in DMC floss. The finished cross stitch pattern stayed true to the paintings using DMC floss efficiently and effectively.

The more creative cross stitcher can choose to highlight the stars by using Kreinik silver or even beads to dot the areas. These cross stitch projects can truly be an enjoyable experience for the cross stitcher once a bit of creative freedom is presented!

The BookWorm by Carl Spitzweg

Whenever I research for paintings to turn into cross stitch pattern, I inevitably stumble upon paintings that become a personal favorite. On the latest batch of cross stitch charts, my favorite is Carl Spitzweg's The Bookworm. Painted in 1850, it depicts a lone eccentric man lost in his library with a light softly shining on him. I can almost imagine that he was probably there all day looking through his collection of books!

It is no surprise that I am drawn to this painting. I am a bookworm myself! :)

To all the bookworms out there who are also cross stitch addicts, this cross stitch project will be perfect for your reading room or mini libraries. The whole project just uses 25 DMC floss and the finished size for a 14 count is 11" x 15". I created this with minimal dithering which would mean less scattering of colors so it would be easier to stitch. It would be a great project for beginners as well as advance cross stitchers!

I'm always on a lookout for unique photos to turn into charts. Yesterday I came across a 1904 print of sea anemones. To be exact it was the 49^th plate from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur of 1904, showing various sea anemones classified as Actiniae. In a recent article by Sheryl Kennedy in The Times-Picayune, she reported that "an extremely weak economy coupled with the reality of a prolonged recession has many consumers in search of quality gifts that come without a high price tag." She cites several craft stores that have seen a boom in the business rather than a downturn as is the case with other stores in the United States. According to the report, handmade gifts are on the rise, especially in Southern states stretching from Texas to Florida, where crafting is a $12 billion industry, according to the Craft and Hobby Association. Nationwide, crafting is a $30 billion industry.

Cross stitch is probably one of the easiest handmade gift that one can get into if you are looking to give a special gift. You do not need any special skill other than following the charts when stitching. The time and effort that is put into creating a handmade gift tells the person you are giving it to that she or he is special.

When times are tough, going back to the basics makes us look into giving more personal gifts where the most expensive part of it will be the time spent making it.

La Belle Dame Sans Merci (The Beautiful Lady without Pity)

During the course of research for paintings suitable for cross stitch patterns, I discovered that "La Belle Dame sans Merci" was a popular subject for the Pre-Raphaelite painters. It was depicted by Sir Frank Dicksee, Frank Cadogan Cowper, John William Waterhouse, Arthur Hughes, Walter Crane, and Henry Maynell Rheam.

What is this painting all about? La Belle Dame Sans Merci or The Beautiful Lady without Pity is a ballad written by the English poet John Keats in 1819. The ballad tells of a knight-at-arms who is doomed by a chance meeting in the meads with a beautiful lady. Enthralled by her sensual allure, he sets her upon his steed and spends the day bewitched by her enchanting company. He falls into a trance to be haunted by ghostly echoes of the lady's other victims and awakes from his magical slumber to find himself alone on a cold and barren hillside where no birds sing.

Jessie Wilcox Smith Cross Stitch Patterns

It is always a pleasure to discover artists and their wonderful paintings. This week we are happy to announce the availability of 20 of Jessie Wilcox Smith paintings on PinoyStitch. Jessie Smith was an American illustrator best known for her work in magazines and children's books.

Quoting from wikipedia "She was a prolific contributor to books and magazines during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, illustrating stories and articles for clients such as Century, Collier's Weekly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's, McClure's, Scribners, and the Ladies' Home Journal. Smith may be most well known for her covers on Good Housekeeping, which she painted from December of 1917 through March of 1933. She also painted posters and portraits. Her twelve illustrations for Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies (1916) are also well known. On Smith's death, she bequeathed the original works to the Library of Congress' "Cabinet of American Illustration" collection."

Cross Stitch Addictus Extraordinaire

It starts with an innocent enough "X" on a piece of aida cloth, then several "XXXXX", pretty soon you are hooked and you start collecting patterns, floss, beads,and aida cloth!

An Informed Cross Stitcher

"Why Martha what a lovely cross stitch that is!"

"Thank you, it took me about 3 months to finish it."

"Wonderful! Who designed it?"

"Well, it's actually from a painting I think...err..I don't know who painted it though"

Rewind...now let's see what happens when the cross stitcher is informed about the artist or the artwork.

"Wonderful! Who designed it?"

"Well that's an interesting story. This was painted by John William Godward. He was an English painter back in the early 1900s. Just like today, there were trends in the types of paintings that were popular. When painters like Picasso started to catch the public eye, Godward's paintings fell out of favor."

"Really? Wow"

"You know what else?"

"What??"

"Godward committed suicide at the age of 61 and have said to have written in his suicide note that "the world was not big enough" for him and a Picasso."
(Speechless)

Now isn't that better? A cross stitch of a painting is just like owning the actual painting. Know about the artist and the art and it makes the project much more meaningful.I always like to think that creating a cross stitch project of a painting is a lot like honoring the works of the artist. It will be your companion for many weeks or months until it is done and when it is finally hung on your favorite spot, it does not just become a finished project but instead becomes a story to tell.

Treasure Hunt Cross Stitch Pattern

I always love discovering new artist and their paintings which can be turned into counted cross stitch pattern heirlooms. Take for example this painting entitled The Flower Seller. I stumbled upon it and the child's haunting beautiful features immediately captured my attention. It was painted by a Russian artist by the name of Alexei Harmaloff who is best known for his informal portraits of sitters whom he painted for their beauty and innocence. Harlamoff often used flowers to symbolise the short-lived innocence of youth. It was a pleasure turning this into a counted cross stitch pattern for stitchers to enjoy!

Race Nears an End for Deal of the Week Cross Stitch Pattern

It's interesting to see how the statistics suddenly jumped when we announced that we were closing the polls for Deal of the Week Counted Cross Stitch Pattern this weekend. We saw figures for the Bride jump up and now it is tied with Ariadne Lady in Red Cross Stitch Pattern. The Reader which has been a favorite for sometime is now slipping behind the other two.

Personally, I root for the Bride Cross Stitch Pattern to win. That is an interesting cross stitch pattern since it is unique in itself. I don't believe any other cross stitch site carries this since I found the picture in some half buried advertisement of the 1920s! Even being that old, the lady sure is enchanting. It would be a great addition for a home or a gift for a wedding.

Watch out this weekend for the winner! (I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for The Bride).

Revue Horticule Flower Cross Stitch Patterns

We have finally finished all 34 of the Revue Horticule Flower Cross Stitch Patterns. This should be uploaded to the store site in the coming days. It was a wonderful experience working on the photos and turning them into Cross Stitch Patterns. I find the Pear Fruit and the Carnation flowers to have come out exceptionally well. Sometimes you have to balance the number of colors and size of the cross stitch pattern to get the best results.

I hope you enjoy stitching them!

Deal of the Week Cross Stitch Pattern Poll has Surprising Results

Every week PinoyStitch offers a Deal of the Week Counted Cross Stitch Pattern with a special price for our customers. I originally intended the Poll to run a week from which I would know what to post for the following week. Two weeks ago the votes were too few to determine which one was the clear winner. Every week after, I've looked and it seems like one is coming out to be the winner but wait..the others are not far behind!

The Cross Stitch Pattern choices were picked from the top views of the store and if I were to base it on that then the winner would be The Reader followed by the The Bride Cross Stitch Pattern. However when it was brought up to poll, a surprise winner was coming out!

Counted Cross Stitch Revue Horticole 1800s

We are all hard at work polishing up the Revue Horticole botanical prints and making it ready to turn into Counted Cross Stitch Patterns! For those aficionados of botanical prints, you now have a chance to create your own using this counted cross stitch patterns.

Take a look at the improvements we have made so far with the prints. The old prints needed some color correction to make the flower colors alive again. Also we have removed the background color to enable the stitchers to use their own fabric color as base.

What do Counted Cross Stitch & China's Weightlifters have in Common?

What do they have in common you say? It turns out these top-level athletes look to a counted cross stitch craft to pass the time! When asked why, weightlifter Liu Chunhong who won the women's 62kg gold medal says, "It provides great satisfaction and excitement when you finish an embroidery. I cannot tell you how much it satisfies me; you will understand when you do it yourself." Chen Xiexia, who won China's first gold in Beijing in the women's -48kg, and Chen Yanqing, a -58kg gold medalist, are also enthusiastic cross stitchers.

"The stitch brings us a lot of fun," Chen said. "People think we must live an exciting life and be in the spotlight all the time, but actually an athlete's life is very boring. We live in the training base, wake up and go to the shooting range, then I come back and sleep. That's my life.

"But stitch gives us something to look forward to after training. You do it needle by needle and maybe after three or four days, you can see a cute piece of work. I simply love it."
